Chapter Event: Kathie Bailey Mathae, National Academies   Print

We are pleased to host Kathie Bailey Mathae from the Board on International Scientific Organizations of the National Academies for our November meeting. This meeting was rescheduled from September. We will have an informal networking dinner followed by conversation about international general assemblies (just what are they and what do they do?), challenges for women mathematicians (discussions held this summer at the International Mathematical Union General Assembly), and the hottest topic on everyone's minds: Just what happened to Pluto!? (from the International Astronomical Union General Assembly).

Kathie Bailey Mathae's Bio:

Kathie Bailey Mathae has served as a Program Officer for BISO since February 2005. Her responsibilities include six U.S. National Committees in math and physical sciences, as well as visa and export control policy. Before coming to the National Academies, Kathie worked for the Association of American Universities for 14 years. Her areas of responsibility there include visa, export control, and diversity issues; the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). She directed the Space Science Working Group, a group of several hundred space scientists and government relations officers interested in the health of university-based space science research. Kathie also authored a report titled “Reinvigorating the Humanities: Enhancing Research and Education on Campus and Beyond,” and worked on a variety of teacher education and K-12/university alignment projects. From 1984 until 1991, Kathie worked for Congresswoman Lindy Boggs (D-LA) as associate staff for VA-HUD appropriations and special projects assistant. Kathie is active in a number of outside activities including: Clan Johnston/e in America (national treasurer); Girl Scouts (leader of Troop 3931 for 9 years); Kenmore Middle School’s and Arlington County’s Reflections fine arts program (chair and past chair respectively); the Arlington Education Fund (board member); the Arlington County Fair (education superintendent); the Arlington Masters Swim team (treasurer and registrar), and the Mount Olivet Foundation (past president). Kathie has a BA from Milligan College, and a JD from Tulane University.
