ABOUT THE TOPIC: The futuristic image of lasers has captured the public imagination since their introduction in James Bond movies and sci-fi thrillers. In fact, lasers are all around us. They print our office documents, check out our groceries, carry our information across the Internet, and read our CDs and DVDs. What is it about lasers that makes them so useful? Beadie will explain what a laser is and why its special properties are uniquely suited to so many applications.
ABOUT THE CONCEPT: Cafe Scientifque flourished first in the U.K. (see http://www.cafescientifique.org) as a way for the public and scientists to mingle and discuss science issues in an informal setting. At least 35 cafés now exist in the U.S.
