Please join the Koshland Science Museum on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 5:30pm-7:00pm, for a discussion with Dr. Jamie King of NOAA, who will discuss potential impacts of introducing nonnative oysters on water systems, marine habitat, and the Chesapeake Bay environment. This program will be held at the Koshland Science Museum at 6th & E Streets, N.W. The evening will begin with a reception, followed by a discussion: 5:30pm-6pm Reception 6pm-6:45pm Discussion 6:45pm-7pm Q&A Dr. Jamie L. King received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Rochester, and Masters and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at Davis. For the past four years she has worked at the NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office, where she serves as Habitat Program Manager and as Federal Program Officer for NOAA’s Nonnative Oyster Research Program. Her work focuses on science and policy issues related to the proposed introduction of a non-native oyster; habitat restoration of native oysters, submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), and living shorelines; and development of shellfish aquaculture in the Chesapeake Bay. Dr. King’s scientific expertise includes marine invertebrate communities, benthic ecology, biodiversity, population genetics, and evolution. Her professional career is aimed at bridging the gap between science and natural resource management, including strategic planning, monitoring, and translating scientific findings to guide management decisions. This is the first event of a two-part series looking at nonnative oysters. The second part of the series, held the evening of Wednesday, July 18, on the Chesapeake Bay Foundation workboat, will allow participants to examine how the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers have changed over recent years during a river expedition with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Participation in both events is encouraged, but not required, so feel free to register for one or both events. The cost is $5; advance ticket purchase is recommended. Contact the Koshland Science Museum at 202-334-1201 or ksm@nas.edu to purchase tickets. |
