The Hydraulic Institute (HI), established in 1917, has retained Sterling Martin Associates to conduct a search for the Director, Knowledge and Education. HI members include large corporations such as ITT Fluid Technologies, Emerson, GE, Baldor, Flowserve, Pentair and Sulzer as well as mid-size and smaller companies. HI is the largest association of pump industry manufacturers in North America. The organization serves member companies and pump users by providing product standards and a forum for the exchange of industry information. As companies seek to reduce energy costs and operate more efficiently, increased attention is being given to this area.
The Director, Knowledge and Education is a new position created to establish the Institute as a global authority in pump and pumping systems and to increase user knowledge and utilization of HI products and services. Reporting to the Executive Director, he/she will develop and manage all aspects of the Institute’s education programs including curriculum development, program delivery and certification. These profitable educational programs and certification programs must be highly valued by members, users, engineering consultants and related academic institutions. This position can be based either in Washington, DC or at the association’s headquarters in Parsippany, NJ.
HI has established itself as the leading spokesperson for the North American pump industry. The Institute offers a wide variety of programs and services, each tailored to member needs: standards development, networking opportunities, access to specific statistical data and economic reports, electronic services, educational materials, breaking industry news, participation in industry initiatives, and more. Position Responsibilities
• Works closely with the Executive Director, and volunteer VP, Knowledge and Education, and associated committees of experts in identifying strategic educational and certification opportunities for the Institute.
• Develops and defines appropriate education curriculum and certification program strategies, policy and procedures for the Institute. • Ensures the effective coordination and delivery of associated programs with Pump Systems Matter, a 501(c) (3) affiliated organization that is creating systems-based approaches to pump and systems education. • With the support of industry volunteers, develop and maintain an analysis of competitive education and certification programs. • Assure that the Institute provides differentiated and valued education and certification programs. • Serves as industry representative and spokesperson on educational related matters and certification programs. • Oversees all aspects, both content and delivery, of Institute’s education programs and services. • Identifies and recommends opportunities for the Institute to form strategic alliances or partnerships with allied organizations in the public, non-profit and private sectors, as appropriate. • Oversight of developing position papers, testimony and policy papers on education topics. • Coordinates closely with communications and marketing to ensure that the industry’s messages on education are at the forefront of industry awareness through Institute communications, the trade press, technical conferences and by any other means. • Serves as the primary staff liaison to the Knowledge and Education Committee. • Serves as a member of the staff executive team, providing overall guidance and direction on implementing the Institute’s strategic vision as approved by the Board of Directors. • Supervises and provides career development opportunities for assigned staff. • Performs other duties, as assigned.
• Ability to set strategic vision and coordinate implementation. • Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills. The ability to establish credibility with Institute members, industry allies, consultants, affiliates and staff. • Significant knowledge and understanding of engineering preferred. Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles a plus. Pump and pumping systems knowledge also desirable. • Experience in working with curriculum development, and certification program design, for adult-focused education and training. • Ability and proficiency at publicly presenting information; demonstrated ability to clearly articulate complex information in a manner to be understood by individuals without a technical background. Outstanding public speaking ability required. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Ability to work under pressure and to multi-task • Ability to generate consensus among various stakeholder groups. • Excellent organizational and management skills required. • Commitment to team-oriented office environment. • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information in an appropriate manner. • Proven ability to hire, supervise and develop staff. • Proficient in utilization of office equipment, computers and MS Office. • Ability to travel domestically as required, including weekends.
Education and Experience: Undergraduate degree required, advanced degree preferred. Educational engineering experience or technical educational experience preferred. Association or non-profit experience preferred, including experience with the development of certification programs.
