Outreach Opportunity: Local Elementary School PDF Print E-mail

Enjoy interacting with children?  Want to share your love of science? Elisabeth Freed is working with Lynn Riggs, the Science Resource teacher at Bailey's Elementary School, to integrate science into the classroom.

Bailey's is a Title 1 school with almost 900 students.  It is also a multicultural, multilingual school.  The predominant ethnic group is Hispanic, which represents about 54% of the population.  Over eighty percent of the students are on free or reduced-fee meals.

Bailey's is a magnet school for the Arts and Sciences. Teachers, administrators, students, and parents have done a wonderful job of integrating arts into the classroom.  Lynn and Elisabeth would like to do the same for science.

Right now Lynn is looking for microbiologists/epidemiologists to:
* Give hands-on presentation to 5th graders, sharing your personal history (major in college, jobs you've had to date, why you like microbiology), anectdotal stories that would be interesting to elementary age students, power point/slides, hands on demonstration/experiment.

The next topic is physics/energy so Lynn is looking for something cool and interesting.

Some of the ideas they would like to implement are:
* Family nights that focus on student work and have tables with hands-on activities with science base (although some of the projects may involved writing, etc);
* Scientist-in-residence program where guest scientists work with small groups on special projects or classes on various science units;
* Afterschool programs (ecology, math, computers, etc.)
* Guest scientists to give presentations; and,
* A community nature center.

Please contact Elisabeth Freed at Freed.Elisabeth -at- epamail.epa.gov if you are interested in any of these activities or would like more information.
